The CCU women's soccer team took on the Mountain Lions of UCCS on Sunday, October 15, in Lakewood and lost 0-2. The Mountain Lions came into the game sporting a 6-1 record in which put them in second place overall in the RMAC. The Cougars came in with a 1-5-2 record in conference and were coming off of a 0-0 draw with Western on Friday.
The first half a little slow with no real action happening until the 11
th minute. UCCS earned a free kick from about 30 yards out and were able to capitalize on it. Launching the kick with intent to score, the Mountain Lions shot went just above the hands of goalie
Ireland VanDyke and hit off the cross bar and bounced straight down into the goal to open up scoring.
Even though the Cougars would out shoot the Mountain Lions in the first half 7-5 and force UCCS to make four saves, the score at halftime would remain 1-0.
In the second half UCCS didn't sit on the one goal lead, but rather pressed the action. They doubled their shot attempts from the first half to the second to 10. One of those shots, in the 56
th minute, found the back of the net to put the Mountain Lions up 2-0, and the score would stay like that until the final whistle of the game.
The Cougars were not without good attempts though managing seven shots on goal for the game. Four Cougars tallied all seven of those attempts.
The Cougars record drops to 4-8-2 overall and 1-6-2 in conference play with just three games to go in the regular season. The Cougars will travel to Spearfish, South Dakota, on Oct. 22
nd to take on the Yellowjackets of Black Hills State University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
