Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Daniel J Cook

Cougars Defeated in Double Overtime

The CCU women's soccer team played in Spearfish, SD, this afternoon, taking on the Yellowjackets of Black Hills State University. The game went into double overtime after a goal-filled second half, but eventually the Cougars we defeated 2-3.

The first half of the game stayed scoreless despite quite a flurry of activity from both teams, but especially the Cougars. CCU tallied six shots in the half, as well as chalking up a 5-0 difference in corner kicks against BHSU, but were unable to connect on any of those early opportunities and went into halftime tied at 0-0.

The second half was a very different game however. BHSU managed five shots and four corner kicks in the latter 45 minutes and scored early to press the action. In the 55th minute the Yellowjackets sent a cross in from the right side that found the head of a teammate to break the scoreless deadlock. They would follow-up that first goal with another in the 67th minute, when another header from inside the box found it's way into the Cougars net, putting the Yellowjackets up 2-0 with just 22 minutes left to play.

The Cougars didn't throw in the towel, instead they kept pressing and eventually found their way onto the scoreboard as well. In the 71st minute freshman Linnea Mosvold took matters into her own hands and dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box from the right side and shot to the far post, netting her first goal of the season, as well as the first of her CCU career so far. The goal would also end the Cougars three-and-a-half game scoreless streak.

The Cougars wouldn't wait long to tie up the game and just five minutes later, freshman Stephanie Muchow claimed her second goal of the season when she launched a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box that would be the equalizing goal. Despite a few corner kicks after the goal, neither team could seal the deal in regulation and the game went to overtime. This would be the Cougars fifth overtime goal of the season.

Not only did the first overtime see no golden goal, neither team managed a shot on the other's defenses. The two teams heading into the second overtime looking to end the match and the Yellowjackets came out victorious after notching a goal off a loose ball inside the CCU box.

The win was the first for the Yellowjackets this season, bringing their records to 1-14 overall and 1-9 in RMAC play. For the Cougars, the loss drops their season record to 4-9-2 overall and 1-7-2 in RMAC competitions. The Cougars will be home for their final two regular season games beginning with an 11:00 a.m. match against Fort Lewis College at Trailblazer Stadium on Thursday, October 26th.
