Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Baldrica's Blocking Leads Cougs to Victory

There is a lot to be said about the CCU Women's Volleyball team right now… like how they are on a 10-game winning streak, or how they are ranked third in the conference, and that they continue to persevere past their opponents in each match.  Their play is not going unnoticed in the RMAC, and Colorado Christian is becoming a contender to host a playoff game.

Friday's night's crucial match vs UCCS propelled the Cougs to excellence.  Before the victory the Cougars were 9-1 and Colorado Springs was 8-2.  CCU defeated the Mountain Lions in five sets that were full of incredible plays by both squads.

UCCS made quite the comeback in the first set being down six points 16-10 and jumping ahead 22-21, which finally ended in a close set win for the Mountain Lions 25-23.  UCCS also took the third set 25-22.  In both their wins on the night they overpowered the Cougs in hitting.  CCU could not be beat in blocking though as they totaled 13 team blocks compared to the Lions eight.  CCU won the second and fourth sets 25-20 and then 25-11 where they hit an incredible .281% and then .480%.  In the fourth set, Colorado Springs was absolutely defeated by the Lady Cougs hitting 0%.

Despite the hard loss, UCCS came back fighting in set five.  It was neck and neck as the score was tied seven times and the lead changed seven times. It wasn't until the score was tied at nines that CCU middle hitter Hope Baldrica exploded at the net!  Baldrica could not have timed her kills and blocks more perfectly.  She scored three huge points to lead the Cougars to a 15-11 win over UCCS.  In the fifth set, Baldrica totaled three blocks and three kills with no errors.

The Cougars outside hitters played with confidence as Cali Bahnsen had 14 kills at .231% and Jacey Johnson had 13 kills, two aces with 16 digs.  Setter Kylee Wurster made 53 assists, 11 digs and had five blocks.  Sophia Proano led CCU with 15 kills at .355% and Baldrica made an incredible double-double with 10 blocks and 10 kills.  It was a knock-out win for everyone on the Cougars side of the court.

CCU Volleyball will be at home on Saturday, Oct. 21st playing Metro State.  The Roadrunners were defeated by Colorado School of Mines on Friday making them 10-2 in conference.  The game is set for 5:00 PM.
