Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars Fall to Metro State

CCU Volleyball faced a tough five-set loss on Saturday night to the Metro State Roadrunners.  The loss meant that the Cougs ten-game winning streak came to a close and bumped them down to fourth place in the RMAC standings.  The Lady Cougs knew who they were facing as Metro State went 18-0 in conference play last season.  It was going to be an "everything you got" kind of match.

The Cougars were coming off a heated five-set victory vs UCCS from the night before, and the Roadrunners were the opposite as they lost in five sets to Colorado School of Mines.  CCU's momentum carried them to a first set win 25-20.  With two huge solo blocks by Jasa Scheierman and Sophia Proano, Christian was looking good at the net.  In set two though, blue and gold's passing started to breakdown, which made it tough to run an efficient offense.  Metro's serving was excellent and the Cougs were having a hard time finding the sweet spot.  The second set was lost 20-25.

A pattern was forming with both teams.  When serve-receive broke down, the points didn't go up.  CCU won the third set 25-21 as the Roadrunner's offense hit poorly.  CCU now led 2-1 in sets.  The fourth was point-for-point between both squads.  CCU was playing well, but Metro's outside hitter #1 Sturges stepped up here game scoring seven kills.  MSUD totaled more kills and digs in the fourth winning it 25-22.  The fifth set ended the match 15-6 Metro.  The Cougars passing was completely defeated.

The match had long rallies that resulted in a massive amount of digs on each side.  Metro came out with 110 digs, and the Cougs had 105.  Senior DS Abigail Bartalo led in digs with 25 in right back.  Freshman outside hitter Jacey Johnson had 15 kills with 15 digs.  Right side, Sophia Proano hit .250% with 14 kills and five blocks.

Head coach Bobby Blanken remarked:

"As the season goes by we are learning our identity as a stubborn defensive team.  Tonight was no exception and if it is any indicator of the future I am looking forward to playoffs"

The Cougars next game will be at #9 Regis University on Oct. 27th 7:00 PM.
