CCU senior
Sophia Proano notched her 1000
th cougar kill on Wednesday night vs the undefeated Colorado College Tigers. The Cougars defeated Colo. College in four sets 25-23, 25-18, 17-25, and 25-23. Proano led the game with 15 kills off 32 attempts and only one error at .438%. The right side hitter transferred to CCU after her freshman year from Regis University and in only three years has made an incredible impact on the program. Last season Proano was honored as RMAC First Team All-Academic, First Team All-RMAC, AVCA All-Region and All-American Honorable Mention, as well as NCCAA All-American. The 15 volleyball RMAC institutions recognized her knockout junior year by naming her 2017 Volleyball Preseason Player of the Year. So far this season, Sophia has lived up to this honor with 204 kills and a .324 hitting percentage, and she is projected to make moves in Cougar volleyball history.
Head coach
Bobby Blanken remarked "I am really proud of Sophia and her progression over the season. 1000 kills is really exciting, but the way she got it was even more exciting to me. The way she mixes up her shots across the court and finds a variety of ways to score really propelled her team today".
Sophia Proano- "I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to play as a Cougar for the past four years and am so thankful for the many teammates, coaches, and staff members who have poured into me over the years. I am so thankful that God placed me at CCU and I see every one of my kills as an accomplishment of my team".
Additionally in the four-set victory vs CC, CCU middle hitter
Hope Baldrica scored 11 kills at .308% with four blocks. Libero
Mariela Gonzalez totaled 23 digs and setter
Kylee Wurster made 47 assists. The Cougars ended hitting .193% as a team with seven blocks.
