Double Overtime Draw for Men's Soccer

Colorado Christian Men's Soccer tied 2-2 against Adams State University on Friday afternoon.  This was Christian's second tie of the season putting them at 1-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.  The tie would be the Grizzles first of the season at 6-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the RMAC.

In was a blue and gold first half as the Cougs were able to put two goals away.  Leading scorers Blake Goodale and Eduard Shevchuk both had their third goals of the season.  Goodale (26 min) shot right from the middle of the field and scored, while Shevchuk (40 min) headed the ball in off of a free kick from Larson Hanlin.  CCU led 2-0 at halftime despite the Grizzles one-up in shots 7-6.

Adams took control of the second half with two of their own goals.  ASU's #12 Marcus Mosley scored the Grizzlies first goal in the sixth minute of the second half.  He took the shot from outside the box, a low-kick into the left corner of the net.  The score was 2-1 CCU.  Christian wasn't fazed as they continued to take shots on goal, actually beating the Grizzles in shots 10-6 in the second.  The game was heated as fouls were rampant- yellow cards and one red card were dished out.  The Grizzles scored goal #2 off of a foul kick that was deflected into the Cougars goal.

After a disruptive lightning delay the game continued and then went into overtime.  In overtime there were two huge opportunities for both sides to score.  CCU had a free kick right outside the box that went over the goal, and immediately following the return, Adams had one-on-one with the keeper as the shot went to the far left of the goal.  Then there was a corner kick for the Cougs that went long and back into ASU possession.  The time ran out as the game went into double overtime.

Double OT started with a nerve-wrecking corner kick by Adams State.  Fortunately the placement just wasn't there as the score remained 2-2.  Back and forth, back and forth as the minutes ran down and both teams desperately tried to score.  An Adams free kick right outside the right side of the box caused hearts to stop, but CCU Keeper Taylor Budzinski made the save inches away from going into the net.  With two minutes left, CCU midfielder Joe Wilkes took a shot on goal from the left side that was deflected off the keeper.  There were no last-second surges by either team, and the game ended 2-2 after a hard-fought battle.

Men's Soccer will travel to Durango, CO on Oct. 8th to play Fort Lewis College.  Kick-off is set for 1:00 PM.
