Colorado Christian women's soccer wrapped up their two-game road trip after they traveled to Salt Lake City, UT, to take on the Griffins of Westminster College. The Cougars started the trip off by defeating Colorado Mesa University 1-0 on Friday evening. Sunday's loss to the Griffins drops the Cougars to 4-7-1 on the season and 1-5-1 in the RMAC.
Â
The game stayed scoreless for the first 44 minutes despite a total of 14 shots between the teams in that time. Halftime was nearly upon the teams, but in the 45
th minute a CCU handball inside the 18-yard box granted the Griffins with a penalty kick prior to the halftime horn. Freshman goalie
Ireland VanDyke has faced more than her fair share of PK's this season with this being her fourth. This was the first penalty kick where VanDyke did not guess right, as the ball went left as she dove to the right.
Â
The second half saw another flurry of shots, this time with a total count of 18. The Cougars kept pressing the action but couldn't get the shots to find the back of the net. The Cougars aggression and pace made for good attempts, but also brought four off-sides calls for the game.
Â
As the game was winding down in the 82
nd minute, Westminster made another push inside the Cougars defensive box. VanDyke was able to block the first shot, but unable to keep possession of the ball, Westminster put the rebounded block back into the goal for the final score of the game.
Â
CCU will be home for their next two games, including an afternoon match against the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University at 1:30 p.m. at Trailblazer Stadium.
