The Colorado Christian University Cougars took on the Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Saturday, December 16, hoping to start a winning streak after notching their first RMAC win last week against Black Hills State University. The Cougars came in with a record of 2-8 (1-3 RMAC) while the Mountain Lions sported a record of 4-6 (1-3 RMAC).
Â
The Cougars were able to build a sizable lead midway through the first half, going up 26-15. The Mountain Lions would not go easily, and eventually took the lead back, albeit briefly, at 34-33. With the score tied at 36 each with under a minute to go, the Cougars did all they could to give themselves a cushion going into halftime. The Cougars would take advantage of an and-1 opportunity, convert the free-throw, and go up 39-36. UCCS would hustle down the court and drain a lay-up before time expired, and the teams would go into halftime with CCU up 39-38.
Â
The Hanson brothers shined again in the first half combing for 26 of the Cougars 39 points, and grabbing seven boards. Though the Cougars shot just 41.2% in the first half, eight offensive rebounds gave them nine second chance points, likely the difference in the first half.
Â
The second half stayed competitive for a while, but the Cougars began to pull away mid-way through on the back of a 10-0 run with 12 minutes left to go. Both teams found their range from behind the arc, combining to go 15-26 from 3-point land. The stellar stats put up from the Cougars paved the way for a comfortable 97-87 win, bringing their record to 3-8 overall, and 2-3 in conference.Â
Â
CCU was led again by
Isaiah Hanson who scored a game-high 27 points on 7-9 shooting from beyond the arc, while also dishing out seven assists, grabbing five rebounds, nabbing a pair of steals, and topping off his stat line with a block.
Jeremiah Hanson kept up his scoring ways after halftime as well, totaling 26 points.
Â
CCU will return to the CCU Event Center looking to extend the winning streak to three when they take on the Roadrunners from Metro State University on Sunday, December 17
th, with tipoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
