Colorado Christian women's soccer traveled to Denver to begin league play on September 15 against the Rangers of Regis University. The Cougars brought with them a 3-2 record heading into the matchup, and the Rangers began the contest at 2-1-1.
Â
The first half was largely controlled by Regis, who outshot CCU by a total of 7-2. Freshman goalie
Ashleigh Maguire started the game for Cougars and was challenged from the start. Maguire and the CCU defense stood strong against the first three shots of the half, but 20 minutes into the game Regis was able to score their first goal.
Â
Maguire ended up seeing a total of seven shots come her way in the first half, doing well to save three of them. The freshman now has a season total of eight saves through six game appearances.
Â
The Cougars fought hard to even the score late in the first half with a few good looks from breakaways and corner kicks, but were unable to finish the job before the halftime whistle blew.
Â
The second half saw the Cougars come out more aggressive with the ball, taking possession and seeing the first shot of the half from junior
Hannah Triem go just over the crossbar and out of play. The Rangers didn't take long to respond after that shot. Just a minute later in the 51
st minute, Regis moved the ball downfield and after a pass inside the 18-yard box, put a shot in that went just over the head of fellow freshman keeper
Ireland VanDyke and into the back of the net to put the Rangers up 2-0.
Â
After the Rangers second goal, the Cougars made a point to press the ball up the field and pressure the defense in an effort to begin to close the gap. CCU was making more long volley passes to try to flip the field, but the efforts were often met with a Regis defensive clearance.
Â
The rest of the second half saw CCU attempt a few more offensive pushes, but ultimately come up empty on the scoreboard. In the final moments of the game, CCU was charged with a foul inside the 18-yard box, giving Regis a penalty kick in the 88
th minute. CCU goalkeeper VanDyke made her best guess at the shot direction and defended to the right, but the Regis penalty taker put the shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. The penalty kick goal sealed the game at 3-0 in favor of Regis.
Â
The loss drops CCU to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in RMAC matches. The Cougars will take the field again on September 17
th when they head down the road to Denver to take on the Roadrunners of Metro State. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
