After a nail-biting five sets, the Cougars fell to the #23 ranked Orediggers. The Cougars took sets two and four and barely missed the win in the fifth set by two points.
The first set was point for point, until the score was tied up at 17's and the Orediggers pulled away to take the win with a score of 25-21. The Cougars started the second set strong and maintained the lead, but the Orediggers fought back to make the game even at sixes. A strong stretch for the Cougs allowed them to take the game with a score of 25-19. The third set was a slow start and CCU was unable to pick up speed throughout the set, and lost 25-15.
Set four was once again point for point, as there were multiple lead changes and crucial timeouts to keep the set exciting. The Cougars were able to take the fourth with a score of 25-22. In the fifth, the Lady Cougs had the lead at the switch, with a score of 8-6. Mines was able to come back and take the lead with a score of 13-11. Three timeouts were called before the end of the set, two taken by The Cougars and one from CSM. The final score was 15-13.
Senior
Sophia Proano was the match leader in kills, racking up 17 and hitting a .375. Two other hitters managed to bring in impressive numbers close behind. Sophomore
Cali Bahnsen had 15 kills and hit a .323, and junior
Hope Baldrica had 14 kills and hit .357.
Defensively,
Hope Baldrica lead the team in blocks by bringing in 6 block assists, to help with the teams total of 8 blocks on the match. Sophomore
Mariela Gonzalez lead the team in digs with 12, followed by Junior
Kylee Wurster with 10.
The Cougars will continue conference play Thursday the 21
st, hosting their home opener against Westminster at 7pm.
