CCU hosted the Westminster Griffins in RMAC competition on Thursday night in front of a large, rowdy home crowd for the first time this season. The Cougars started the night with an overall record of 4-7, and 2-1 in conference play, the Griffins stood at 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC. The Cougars only got better as the match went on, and made quick work of the Griffons winning in straight sets, 26-24, 25-18, and 25-9.
Â
The Cougars led for most of the first set but would not run away with it. In the latter half, the Griffins would even the score and the two teams would swap points until the very end. The Cougars ultimately won the first set 26-24 when the winning point was served up as an ace by senior
Joelle LeFevre, her second of the set. Leading the way in the opening set was senior opposite hitter
Sophia Proano with six kills.
Â
The second set saw Westminster open the scoring by notching the first point of the set, but the Cougars would control the action after that, never trailing again and winning the set 25-18. The second set was a perfect example of teamwork, with four players notching two or more kills, predominantly assisted by junior setter
Kylee Wurster, who had 17 just in the second set, and 43 for the match.
Â
Set number three was completely dominated by the Cougars who went runs of six and seven points in a row on their way to a victory by a score of 25-9. Proano had a career night notching 16 kills and tallying a remarkable hitting percentage of .500. Junior
Hope Baldrica also had a more than noteworthy night, smashing eight kills with an extraordinary hitting percentage of .538.
