The Cougars traveled to Grand Junction on Saturday, Jan. 13, to take on the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University. CCU came into the game with a record of 3-12 (2-7 RMAC) in search of a much-needed win to break a four-game losing streak. The Mavericks started the evening sporting a record of 7-9 overall (3-7 RMAC). The game would showcase four of the RMAC's top eight scorers and promised to be a good one.
Â
The first half started off as a very even game, with both teams leading multiple times throughout the first 20 minutes, the game was set to be a classic. Determined to set the tone early, red-shirt junior
Stefan Hackethal dropped in 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and all his made baskets either tied the game or gave the Cougs a lead. Despite great individual numbers from Hackethal, CCU shot just 40.6% in the first half which left them trailing at halftime by a score of 34-40.
Â
Mid-way through the second half CCU pulled within two points of the lead, however between CCU's foul trouble and stellar shooting from CMU, the Cougars could not keep pace and ultimately fell to the Mavericks 70-85.
Â
Hackethal couldn't keep up his scoring streak going in the second half but still led the Cougars in scoring with 18 points. Freshman point guard
Tyler Murrell had another good all-around game tallying seven points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, leading the game in both latter categories.
