The CCU women's soccer team took the short drive to Metro State University Denver this to take on the Roadrunners in a late afternoon game. The Roadrunners came into the match 3rd in the RMAC standings at 6-2 (8-2-1 overall) while the Cougars were holding onto a playoff spot in seventh place at 4-4 (5-5-2 overall). The Cougars eventually found themselves in another overtime match, falling in the second overtime period to a goal in the 103rd minute.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Regulation saw a tough fought match with CCU knocking four shots on goal and MSUD getting five on goal, and neither team getting another on goal in the first overtime. However, as the first extra period came to an end, CCU defender Kennady McCullough received her second yellow card, leaving the Cougars to fight shorthanded for the final overtime period.
It didn't take the Roadrunners long in the second overtime to take advantage of the Cougars disadvantage. MSUD got three shots off in the first three minutes of the final period, putting the last one in the back of the net off a rebounded save from CCU keeper Ireland VanDyke.
GAME/MATCH/RACE LEADERS:
- Maddison Hogan was one of three Cougars with three shots in Denver, but was the only player on CCU's side to put them both on goal.
- Not fans of overtime: Since 2015 the CCU women's soccer team is 1-10-11 in overtime games. The lone victory came against Regis in 2016.
