Cougars Frozen in Colorado Springs

The CCU Cougars traveled down to play the Mountain Lions of UCCS a day later than originally scheduled. Though the teams avoided the snow, they didn't avoid the temperatures, which were in the high 30's at kickoff. The 2-0 loss drops the Cougars overall record to 5-7-2 (4-6-0 RMAC) with three games left in the regular season. Currently 8th in the RMAC standings with Dixie State just percentage points ahead, the Cougars have a chance at nine more points to make it into the post-season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first 45 minutes of the game saw the teams trading possession but with the Mountain Lions taking twice as many shots as the Cougars. Despite being outshot, the Cougars were menacing enough to force UCCS to switch up formations to deal with the CCU strategy. When the halftime horn sounded the teams headed into their huddles scoreless.

The second half saw a much more aggressive Mountain Lion squad, earning two corner kicks and three shots within the first 10 minutes. The UCCS attacking culminated in their first goal in the 63rd minute, giving them a lead they would not relinquish. Their second goal came in the 77th minute which sealed the scoring, and the game, for UCCS.

GAME/MATCH/RACE LEADERS:
  • The Cougars mustered just four shots in the game, with the lone shot on goal coming from Amanda Lopez at the end of the first half.
  • The loss marks CCU's first three game losing streak since the first three games of RMAC competition last season.

UP NEXT: The Cougars are back home for their final three RMAC games of the season, starting Friday the 19th at 1:00 p.m. The game will kick off the weekends Homecoming Festivities which include home soccer and volleyball games, as well as multiple alumni events.
