With the end of the season nearing every point is crucial. The Cougars came into today's game with a slight hold onto the 8th spot in the RMAC table, a slot that would get them into the postseason for the first time since 2016. A win would not have guaranteed a playoff spot, but it would have gone a long way with so many other teams owning a game in hand. After 110 minutes though, CCU was unable to secure a three-point win and would have to settle for a single point draw with Regis University.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
The initial 45 minutes saw the Cougars play some of their best defense of the season, closing in on attackers quickly and allowing just five shots, two of which were on goal. Offensively the Cougars managed just three shots in the opening half, but nearly got the one that counted in the 36th minute when
Renee De La Torre's free kick from roughly 35 yards out forced the Regis keeper into the goal, but she managed to keep the ball out saving the Cougar point.
Â
The second half saw the two teams nearly even in fouls but with Regis getting four shots off while blanking CCU for the entire 45 minutes. It was more of the same in both overtime periods with Regis dictating much of the action. Overall Regis led in shot (11-4), shots on goal (5-1), and corner kicks (6-4).
Â
GAME/MATCH/RACE LEADERS:
- Each team set a new conference high in fouls this game with Regis committing 14 infractions and CCU tallying 24 violations
- Today's scoreless draw was the first since Oct. 14th, 2016 against Western State.
- VanDyke claimed her third shutout of the season, tallying as many saves today, five, as she did in the first two combined.

The Cougars still need to do work in their final two games of the season, but could also use some help from other teams in order to secure that postseason berth. The Cougars are back on the pitch on Sunday the 21st when they take on the winless Yellowjackets from Black Hills State University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. and come early as the team honors their favorite professors before the game!
