Sunday's game against Black Hills State University was key for CCU, in order to stay in the playoff hunt they needed all three points possible. The Cougars would end up taking the game in dominant fashion, claiming a 2-0 win that wasn't as close as the score line suggests.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
The opening half was controlled almost exclusively by the Cougars, who handled the ball early and often.
Celeste Ruelas scored the opening goal in the 28th minute when she kept her shot low and slipped the ball into the corner in the far post. Her shot was assisted be both
Karli Wilson and
Amanda Lopez. The Cougars would rip another six shots before halftime but would not be able to score on any of them.
Â
The second half started off with a bang when Cougar sophomore
Stephanie Muchow scored her fourth goal of the season off a wonderfully placed corner kick from
Renee De La Torre. That goal would prove to be the final of the game despite the Cougars taking over two dozen shot attempts.
Â
GAME LEADERS:
- Celeste Ruelas' first half score ended a Cougar goal drought that had reached 458 minutes since they last scored in the 62nd minute against Dixie State on October 5.
- Ireland VanDykes 74 saves on the season (and counting) gives her the most for a single keeper at CCU since 2012.
