The Cougars lost their first home game of the season today as they conceded a goal to the Westminster Griffins in overtime to fall 0-1. The Cougars had won their previous three game, and four of their past five. The loss brings the Cougars record to 5-5-2 overall, and 4-4 in RMAC competition.
HOW IT HAPPENED: From a possession and pressure point of view, the Griffins and Cougars found themselves matched up remarkably well throughout the first two halves. However, the box score told a different story, with the Griffins outshooting the Cougs 20-9, including 3-0 in the overtime period.
Starting keeper for CCU
Ireland VanDyke fended off eight shots on goal through the first 98 minutes, but Westminster ended the game when a free-running Griffin attacker dribbled the length of the 18-yard box and launched a shot into the opposite side netting of the goal just out of the outstretched hands of VanDyke.
GAME/MATCH/RACE LEADERS:
- Today's outcome broke a six-game goal streak the Cougars had built up since the opening weekend of conference play.
- The 2018 Cougar team can make history next weekend if they sweep, as they would become the first women's squad to defeat UCCS and MSU-Denver in the same season.
UP NEXT: Despite the setback, the Cougars still find themselves in position to make a postseason run, currently sitting in seventh place in the RMAC. The Cougs will be tested in the upcoming weeks though, as they will travel to Denver to face the Roadrunners of MSU-Denver on Friday the 12th and then head south to Colorado Springs to take on the UCCS Mountain Lions on Sunday the 14th.
