Even though the Cougars were coming off of two tough losses the day before, they did not quit fighting their way through the Colorado Premiere Tournament. With two games on day two, the Cougars faced two teams in the top ten in the AVCA Coaches Poll. #7 Regis and #6 Lewis took both wins against Colorado Christian.
MATCH ONE VS REGIS
HOW IT HAPPENED: Right away Regis took control of the first set, going on a 3-0 run. Taking a nine point lead at 19-10, the Cougars were unable to recover and lost the set 25-16. Â Colorado Christian had the lead for most of set two, but the Rangers came back to tie it up at 17's. But with a couple kills from Cali Bahnsen the Cougars were able to get a jump on Regis and shut down their offense, taking the set 25-19. Coming into the third set, the Rangers took an early lead on Colorado Christian. Just like the set before, the teams found themselves tied up at 17's again. They went back and forth all the way until they were matched at 20, and the Regis offense took over from there to win 25-21. Taking an early lead again in the fourth set, the Rangers didn't let the Cougars catch up this time. Even though the Cougars had more kills, they had more than double the Regis errors. The Rangers took the set and the match with a score of 25-21.
MATCH LEADERS: The Cougar middles lead the team in hitting percentage this game, Katie Henry hitting .318 and Jasa Scheierman hitting .250. With 12, Jacey Johnson lead the team in kills with Henry not far behind with 10. Mariela Gonzalez tallied 22 digs in the fight.
MATCH TWO VS LEWIS
HOW IT HAPPENED: Even though the Cougars were down two sets, they were still able to take the next two and take the match to five. The Flyers offense in the first set was unstoppable, hitting .314 as a team with 13 kills and only two errors. Colorado Christian had 15 kills, but 8 errors is what brought them down. Lewis took an early lead and kept it to win the set by five. The second set the Flyer offense was still in their rhythm, and took an early lead and ran with it to win by eight this time. Not giving up yet, the Cougars came back in the third and played a much cleaner match than before, tallying 18 kills. The teams were tied up at 20, but the Flyers only got in one more point before the Colorado Christian won 25-21. The fourth set saw the teams trading unforced errors, but the Cougars were able to pull ahead and have the upper hand at 24-20. The Flyers gave them a run for their money when they had three kills in a row to make it a one point set, but a kill from Katie Henry sealed the win 25-23. Colorado Christian was up by two at the switch, but the Flyers offense went on another run to win the match 15-11.
MATCH LEADERS: Closing off her incredible weekend, Katie Henry led the Cougars again offensively. She racked up a career high of 20 kills and a .316 hitting percentage. Next in kills was Cali Bahnsen with 12, and Jacey Johnson with 10. These kills wouldn't be possible without setter Kylee Wurster dishing out 50 assists in the match, and Mariela Gonzalez digging up 27 hits.
Although the weekend did not have the outcome they were looking for, the Cougars played against some of the best teams in the country to prepare them for their RMAC run. Junior blocker Katie Henry said "The team did well at competing against high level teams and going into conference play we are excited to continue to do the same. We are hoping to work hard and finish well." Colorado Christian hosts their first game of conference play against UC Colorado Springs on September 7th at 7pm.
