Cougs Fall to Sea Lions in Overtime

The CCU women's soccer team wrapped up their California road trip today against the Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego losing by a score of 0-1 in overtime. The loss brings the Cougars record to 1-1-2 as they head into RMAC competition later this week.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The first half saw the Sea Lions come out strong, ripping eight shots before the Cougars took their first. After the first 45 minutes the Sea Lions had a 10-3 advantage on shots, forcing CCU keeper Ireland VanDyke to make a play on three of them. Though the half was mostly controlled by PLNU, the teams went into halftime scoreless.

The second half saw a bit more fight from the Cougars, who controlled a lot of the early action. Despite good looks from each side though, the second half remained a scoreless draw and the two teams headed for extra time. For CCU, it would be their third such contest in four games, the previous two ended in draws.

Sarah Feller got things started off in the first overtime, launching a high, arching shot from about 45 yards out that nearly found it's way into the net for the win, but the shot was just slightly offline and hit the goal post and bounced out instead of in. As the first overtime period was coming to an end, a jumble in the box in the 99th minute would lead to a Sea Lions goal leading to the first loss of the season for CCU.

UP NEXT: CCU opens Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play this coming Friday, September 14th, when they travel to Grand Junction, CO, to take on the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University.
