One Goal Enough for Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – It only took one and unfortunately for the Cougars, the one wasn't for the them.

Colorado Mesa scored the game's lone goal in the early stages of the final half in posting a 1-0 win against Colorado Christian in the RMAC opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Both teams played fairly evenly during the opening 45 minutes with the home team holding a slim 8-5 edge in total shots. The Mavericks (3-1-1, 1-0 RMAC) held a 3-1 advantage for shots on frame with goalies Ireland VanDyke and Emily Signorio up to the task.

In the 55th minute Zoe Peterson scored her first goal of the season off a rebound from Ryanne Parker's original shot.

After the Mavericks goal Colorado Christian stayed on the attack as they produced nine shots and earned two corner kicks down the stretch.  Late in the contest the Cougars (1-2-2, 0-1) got shots on goal from Stephanie Muchow and Amanda Lopez but Signorio made the saves less than a minute apart.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

- Colorado Christian held a 17-16 edge for total shots with the home team winning the shots on goal tally (9-7)
- VanDyke made eight saves; the second most for her on the season after making nine at Cal State Dominguez Hills
- Amanda Lopez took a team high five shots for the Cougars
- A fairly clean game with each team getting whistled for just six fouls

KEEPING THINGS LOW SCORING: The Cougars have allowed five goals this season which is the fewest through five games for the program since the 2014 campaign when they allowed just one.

UP NEXT: The Cougars continue their RMAC road swing with a Sunday game at Western States with their contest in Gunnison, Colo. slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
