Fifth Set Finish

After a loss the night before and some travel, the Cougars pushed through and defeated the Chadron Eagles in five to secure their second conference win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Starting off strong, the Eagles took the first three points of the match. They held the lead the entire set from start to finish, thanks to their consistent offense. They took the set with a final score of 25-18.

Although the Cougars had the lead the majority of set two, Chadron fought back at the end to make the set as close as it could get. The teams both traded numerous unforced errors in the set, but Colorado Christian was able to take the set 25-23.

Not liking the close call in set two, the Cougars came out in set three and took over, continually notching away at their lead. Jacey Johnson and Cali Bahnsen, the Cougar outsides, continually found the holes in the Eagle defense and did not let up. Colorado Christian took set three by ten, 25-15.

Coming back with fire, the Eagles played their best set in set four. Their clean play at the net allowed the team to continually go on long runs over the Cougars, taking the set 25-17. The Eagles front row took over, hitting the open shots and setting strong blocks.

The fifth set was off to a good start for the Cougars, after a couple Eagle errors and smart offensive plays allowed them to go up by 5, 6-1. Chadron had some momentum and big plays to get everyone going, but Colorado Christian held strong through the pressure and continued to play their game. The consistency gave them the win with a final score of 15-8, finishing out the match with an ace from Kaira Smith.

MATCH LEADERS: Three Cougars landed double digit kills tonight, including Cali Bahnsen with 16, and Ashley Drye and Jacey Johnson with 12 a piece. Kylee Wurster earned herself yet another double double, with 47 assists and 14 digs, as well as 5 kills and 4 aces. Mariela Gonzalez tied Wurster with 14 digs on the match. Kaira Smith had three aces, putting her at the top of the team with 16 aces on the season.

WHAT'S NEXT: The win gives the Cougars a conference record of 2-3, and 4-10 overall. Colorado Christian will host the next weekend of games, starting with CSU Pueblo on Friday, September 21st at 7pm.
