One Two Three Sweep

Coming off of a weekend of wins at home, the Cougars continued the streak and earned their third straight sweep in a row as they played the Mountaineers at Western State.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Starting off strong, the first set was in the Cougars favor from the get go. However when Colorado Christian was ahead 22-12, a hefty ten point lead, the Mountaineers rallied for four straight points for one final push in the set. But the Cougars prevailed to win the set 25-17. Colorado Christian hit a match high of 16 kills.

Set two saw the Cougars taking over and holding nothing back, winning 25-10. The offense for Colorado Christian took off, hitting an incredible .423 after 12 kills and 1 error, all while holding Western State to .032.

Set three was a different story, taking the set into extra points. Although the Cougars had 15 kills, they had 12 errors to lessen the blow. With constant lead changes, both teams had the pressure on; Colorado Christian fighting for their third straight sweep, and Western State fighting to stay in the match. The two point runs continued to trade until the teams were tied at 26. An attack error from the Mountaineers and an ace from Christa Tucker finished off the match, with a final score of 28-26.

MATCH LEADERS: The middles led the charge from the hitting percentage side, Kristy Dick hitting .400, and Katie Henry hitting .286. With 11 kills, Ashley Drye led the Cougars in numbers. Just one behind was Cali Bahnsen with 10, her fourth match in a row in the double digits. Kylee Wurster had an incredible game per usual, with 4 kills and 33 assists. Mariela Gonzalez led defensively with 23 digs, followed by Jacey Johnson with 13. The freshman on the front row, Ashley Drye and Kristy Dick landed three blocks together, the fourth coming from a Katie Henry solo. Overall, the Cougar offense dominated as they doubled the Mountaineer kills 43-21.

WHAT'S NEXT: The win gives the Cougars their fourth conference win in a row, third straight sweep in a row, and an RMAC record of 5-3. Overall their record is 7-10. The team will travel to Grand Junction, Colorado, to play the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University at 4pm.
