After a successful opening home stand to start the 2018 season, the CCU women's soccer team traveled west for a pair of matches against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Point Loma Nazarene University. Today's matchup was against the 0-2-0 Toro's from Dominguez Hills.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first half was a fairly even matchup between the two teams, and even though the Toro's outshot to Cougars 5-4, they also held themselves back with seven first half fouls. It didn't take long though for the Cougars to make their way onto the scoreboard. Making her first start for CCU, forward Amanda Lopez took her first shot as a Cougar in the 14th minute of the game and found the back of the net, giving the Cougars the early lead. Though there would be six more shots in the half, none would find pay dirt before halftime.
The second half began a bit slower than the first, with neither team taking a shot until the 66th minute, but when they started, the Toro's took four shots within a three minute span, culminating in a goal after a few passes inside the box. The Cougars would answer back with their own flurry of shots, none of which would break the tie.
The match would go into sudden victory over time, but neither team would put away a handful of good chances, and the game would come to an end after 100 minutes in a 1-1 draw.
MATCH LEADERS:
- Amanda Lopez led all players with five shots, she also had the lone goal for CCU.
- The Toro's outshot the Cougars 20-12 this afternoon.
- Starting keeper Ireland VanDyke would save nine shots, an early season high for the sophomore.
- The Cougars are unbeaten through three games for the first time since 2014.
UP NEXT: The Cougars will spend a few days in Southern California training and prepping for their next match which will come on Monday the 10th against the Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene University. Game time is slated for a 12:30 kickoff local time, which means 1:30 p.m. back in Lakewood.
