Coming off of a conference opening win the night before, Colorado Christian hosted the Orediggers from Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers, who had a big win against Regis the night before, came away with the win in five sets again.
HOW IT HAPPENED: From the start, the Orediggers came out swinging. They went five straight points in a row to open the match and take the lead. The Cougars were unable to shorten the difference that Mines created, and lost 25-17. The Orediggers hit their team match high of .281, and held Colorado Christian to .091.
The Cougars came out in set two with an offense that Mines couldn't dig up, hitting a match high for both teams of .333. With solo blocks from both Katie Henry and Ashley Drye, the momentum continued to climb. The teams were steady paced until the Cougars went on a six point run to close out the set, winning 25-15.
Carrying their momentum over into the third set, the Cougar offense continued to prevail. The third set saw numerous long rallys that were game changers when the point finally came. Colorado Christian took the lead from the get go and never gave it back, taking the win 25-18.
Set four was neck and neck for most of the set, until Mines went on a six point run to go up 20-16. The teams continued to trade offensive blows, and the Cougars had the match high of 17 kills. But the Orediggers came out on top and won 25-22.
Completely shutting down the Cougar offense, the Orediggers fought the pressure and won the deciding set 15-8.
MATCH LEADERS: Leading the Cougars offensively was middle blocker Katie Henry, who tallied 16 kills and hitting .357. Also in double digits was Cali Bahnsen who tied the high with 16, and Ashley Drye with 13. Leading defensively was Mariela Gonzalez with 17 digs, and also lead in aces with three. Earning a double-double, Kylee Wurster dealt 45 assists and had 16 digs. Jacey Johnson, Kaylee Bundrick, and Christa Tucker also hit double digits in digs with 15, 13, and 10 respectively.
The loss gives the Cougars a conference record of 1-1, and 3-8 overall. Hitting the road for their next match in only a few days, the Cougars will play at Regis University on September 11th at 7pm.
