Mountaineers Register A Sweep

LAKEWOOD, CO – Looking to salvage a weekend split of conference matches, the Colorado Christian volleyball squad struggled to put together a consistent effort.

Western posted a sweep of the Cougars (25-20, 25-19, 25-21) on Saturday evening as the visitors kept their opposition off balance.

HOW IT HAPPENED: In the opening set the Mountaineers opened up the frame in the early going. With the score knotted at 7-7, the visitors scored six unanswered points and never trailed again. To aid in the opening set win they hit .306 as a team with just one hitting error.

Midway through the second set Western had doubled-up the home team (16-8). However, the Cougars rallied and got as close as 21-19 which caused the visitors to use a timeout. After the stoppage the Mountaineers scored four straight to grab a commanding lead in the match.

A tightly played third set ensued. Western jumped out to an 8-2 edge but Colorado Christian battled back to within one point on four occasions. The critical scoring spurt came late. Western held a 17-16 lead and finished the contest on an 8-4 scoring run.

COUGAR LEADERS: For the second straight night Cali Bahnsen led all hitters with 16 kills. In the first set alone she registered nine kills.

CAREER MILESTONE: Midway through the second set Mariela Gonzalez reach the 2,000 career dig mark. She is the first player in school history to reach the milestone. She now has 2,010 career digs,

UP NEXT: The Cougars will log significant miles next weekend when they travel to Fort Lewis (Friday, Oct. 18) and Adams State (Oct. 19) next weekend.
