First Conference Road Sweep Complete

Earning their first on the road RMAC win of the year, the Cougars took New Mexico Highlands by storm and won their match in three straight sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The battle was tough from the get go, as the teams battled point for point throughout the first set. It wasn't until the two were tied up at 20's that the Cougars were able to pull away on a 4-0 lead, making the score 24-20. Colorado Christian took set one with a final score 25-22.

Set two started out in similar fashion to the first with the Cowgirls and Cougars trading points. Colorado Christian was able to pull away in the middle of a set to take a lead as much as 5 points with a score of 18-13. The Cowgirls were able to work their way back in with strong offensive efforts to tie the set up once again at 20-20. The Cougars were set up to take their second set in a row with a 3 point lead at 24-21, but did not earn this one without a fight. Highlands fought their way back in to tie it up 24-24, but the Cougars shut them down with two straight points to take the set.

Taking the third set with more force, Colorado Christian started off the third set with four straight points to put them ahead and never look back. The offense the Cougars were putting up was the best all match, and Highlands was unable to put a stop to it. They finished the final set with an impressive 18 kills to give them a team average of .371, pushing them ahead for an overall match finish of .304.

MATCH LEADERS: Leading the team on the offensive front was outside hitter Veronica Nederend, tallying an impressive 19 kills and hitting a .479 on the night. Jincey Nystedt had 39 assists, her new career high. Mariela Gonzalez led defensively with 16 digs.

UP NEXT: The sweep gives Colorado Christian an overall record of 6-8 and a conference record of 2-4. The team will travel to CSU Pueblo for their next match, beginning at 5pm on Saturday, October 5th.
