LAKEWOOD, CO – A sunny mid-Sunday afternoon on the pitch had enough excitement and drama for two RMAC games.
South Dakota Mines topped the Cougars by a 2-1 count in a performance that could have had twice as many goals than were scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED: South Dakota Mines scored the first goal of the game in the 11th minute. Despite missing his first penalty kick, Brendan Sherwin was given a second chance which he deposited in the back of the cage.
Early in the second half George Martinez tried to make it 2-0 with a shot in close but a Brett Folk's save and good scrambling defense by Colorado Christian kept the score the same.
Moments later in the 61st minute the Hardrockers did take a two-goal lead when Brennan Lamoreaux scored his second goal of the season from in-close after a nice chest pass from George Martinez.
Colorado Christian nearly got within one-goal five minutes later but back-to-back team saves by the visitors kept the Cougars off the scoreboard. Despite that emotional set-back, the home team responded when Dmitri Fabro scored his first goal on the season on a penalty kick in the 77th minute after a hand ball in the box.
South Dakota Mines nearly retook a two-goal edge in the 84th minute but a Colorado Christian team save negated Sterling Mckenzie effort.
The Cougars continued to press into their offensive third but couldn't connect for a shot on frame during the closing minutes.
