Double Overtime Downs Cougars in Conference Opener

LAKEWOOD, CO - The kick off to RMAC play began Friday as Colorado Christian took on Colorado Mesa at Trailblazer Stadium.

The matchup was tightly contested as the Cougars and Mavericks went into a second overtime before the Mavericks were able to pull away with the game winning goal in the 107th minute of play.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Both teams stayed scoreless through the first 80 minutes of play with the ball staying in the middle third of the field for the majority of the first half, with the Cougars having four shots and the Mavericks having three shots.

The second half started the same way the first half ended, both teams playing solid defense and keeping the ball in the middle third. Colorado Mesa struck first with a goal in the 82nd minute on a strike from 15 yards out that snuck over the defenders and goalkeepers hands to find the back of the net and give the Mavericks the lead.

The Cougars were not done yet as they found the back of the net in the 88th minute of play as Adrianna Todd played a ball that bounced off the goalie's hands after a corner kick from Sarah Feller. Todd tapped it in to bring the Cougars back even.

Heading into overtime the Cougars had a ten to five shot advantage which quickly slipped away as the Mavericks took six shots in the overtime periods, with the last one being a goal on a loose ball in the box that the Mavericks slotted into the bottom left side of the net.

COUGAR LEADERS: Sarah Butler led the team in shots with three, Feller and Brooke-lyn Schultz both had two shots. Ashleigh Maguire had three saves in goal for the Cougars.

STATS FROM THE GAME:

  • The Cougars had five corner kicks in the game while the Mavericks only had two
  • Emily Michalak was on the field for 107 minutes which was the highest on the team
  • Todd scored her first collegiate goal with the strike in the 88th minute
