Five Set Heartbreaker for the Cougars

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Cougars are ready to play a home match.

The Colorado Christian volleyball team completed their 10-match road swing to open the season with a heartbreaking five-set loss to UCCS. The Mountain Lions rallied for a 22-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13 win on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After taking a 2-0 lead in the contest, Colorado Christian couldn't get that final set win as the home team rallied.

Colorado Christian rallied from an early deficit and won nine of the last 12 points in the first set for the early lead. In the second stanza the home team posted a .000 hitting mark while the Cougars had a respectable .226 hitting percentage to aid in their two set advantage.

A back-and-forth third set ensued as UCCS slowly nudged ahead in the final stages before winning the frame on their third set point. Colorado Christian took the early fourth set lead but the Mountain Lions responded well and forced the decisive final frame.

In that final stanza the Mountain Lions had just enough fire power left as they had seven kills with just one error. While the Cougars did have nine kills, they committed four errors in the critical frame.

COUGAR LEADERS: Jasa Scheierman had a team high 17 kills and posted a .517 hitting percentage. Both were career highs for the junior. Kristy Dick rounded out the double figure kill producers for Colorado Christian with 11.

Along the back row Mariela Gonzalez put together a 19-dig performance while Kaylee Bundrick racked-up 15. Maddie Burns had 46 assists from her setter spot and fell one dig shy of her second double-double of the season.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Each team had 53 kills and were within one one-thousandth of a percentage point on attack percentage (.195, CCU – .196, UCCS)
- UCCS out blocked the Cougars 11-7
- The Mountain Lion overcame a 13 service error performance
