High Powered Offense Fuels Cougars to Victory

LAKEWOOD CO -  Colorado Christian was back in action this weekend, as they took on New Mexico Highlands at Trailblazer Stadium. 

The Cougars offense was firing on all cylinders Friday as the Cougars put five of the eight shots they had on goal in the back of the net. This was the first time the Cougars have scored five or more goals since October 21, 2016 against Black Hills State in a 9-0 win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: The first 30 minutes of game time were tightly contested with neither team having a great opportunity to score. Sarah Butler opened the game's scoring with a goal in the 36th minute as she tapped in a centering pass received from Sarah Feller

Coming out of the half up 1-0 Colorado Christian turned up the pressure to start the second half of play, with Amanda Lopez scoring her third goal of the season just four minutes out of the break as she corralled a pass, flicked it to herself and sent a strike to the lower right corner of the goal. 

Saige Stock followed up with a goal of her own in the 56th minute as she scored on a header off a corner kick from Feller, giving Stock her second goal of the season and Feller her second assist of the game. 

Molly Miller scored the final two goals of the game as a late substitute into the game, the first goal was created off a through ball from Amanda Lopez and Miller buried the ball into the bottom left corner in the 78th minute, widening the lead to 4-0 for the Cougars. Miller scored her second goal of the game in the 82nd minute of game, as she received a pass and dribbled past the goalkeeper and scored on the open net. 

COUGAR LEADERS: Stock led the team with six shots, Feller was second with four shots, Stock and Lopez both had three shots as well. Ireland VanDyke led the defense with three saves. 

STATS FROM THE GAME: 

  • Molly Miller scored her first two goals of the season and her collegiate career, Miller is now tied for second on the team in goals with only 52 minutes played 
  • Colorado Christian had a season-high 24 shots in the win.
  • The Cougars had eight shots on goal and scored five of those, for a .625 shooting percentage
