SALT LAKE CITY – If you like a strong display of shooting, Saturday night in northern Utah was an ideal place to be.
Both teams were solid on the offensive end of the floor as Westminster notched a 94-73 win against the Cougars.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In the opening half both teams shot outstanding from the field but a 13-turnover performance by the Cougars in the initial frame proved pivotal. Colorado Christian shot 54.2 percent from the floor but the home team hit 16 of their 28 attempts (57.1 percent).
Colorado Christian jumped out to a 17-7 lead less than five minutes into the contest; however the Griffins buckled down defensively in forcing those turnovers. Westminster took a 45-35 edge into the locker room aided, in part, from a plus-11 edge in points off turnovers.
The hot shooting continued out of the locker room. Colorado Christian got their deficit down to five points (60-55) after a Spencer Hoffman lay-up with just under 14 minutes left. However, Westminster stretched their lead back to double figure short thereafter as shooting remained the story. At the midway point of the frame, the Cougars were 13-for-18 (72.2 percent) from the floor while Westminster knocked down 11 of their 17 attempts (64.7 percent).
As the final minutes unfolded the Cougars shooting cooled as Westminster continued to hit jump shots at a consistent rate. Colorado Christian made four field goals in the final 10 minutes as the Griffins converted on eight of their final 12 attempts.
COUGAR LEADERS: For the second straight night, Spencer Hoffman scored 24 points – matching his career high. The sophomore nailed 11 of his 15 attempts while grabbing a team high seven rebounds.
Luke Martin registered 12 of his 13 points in the opening frame. The sophomore was 3-for-4 from behind the arc during his career best scoring effort. Aiden Cantwell rounded out the double figure scorers for Colorado Christian with an 11-point performance.
