Cougars Succumb to Colorado Mesa Rally

LAKEWOOD, CO – A heartbreaker for the Cougars on Saturday night.

Colorado Christian took a two set lead against the defending RMAC champions but Colorado Mesa rallied for a 3-2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-10, 25-22, 15-11) victory in a marathon contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougars raced out to a big lead in the opening frame and held off a late rally to take the first set. Colorado Christian went ahead 14-4 before the Mavericks trimmed their deficit to five points but never any closer. In that stanza the Cougars notched an impressive .625 hitting percentage en route to the match's early edge.

As the second frame unfolded, it mirrored the opening stanza. Colorado Christian raced out to a big lead (17-7) before the Mavericks chipped away and pulled within five points. Once again, the Cougars methodically pulled away as they took a two set lead.

Colorado Mesa completely flipped the script in the third set. As they took their first lead of the match, the visitors registered a .476 hitting mark and never trailed in forcing a fourth stanza. In that frame, a battle ensued. Colorado Christian went ahead 10-3 but the pesky Mavericks battled back and took the lead at 20-19. The Cougars briefly held an edge at 21-20 before Colorado Mesa ended the set on a 5-1 scoring spurt.

That critical momentum that Colorado Mesa created continued to the final set. The Mavericks scored five of the first seven points and never trailed. Colorado Christian pushed back in a significant way as they tied the score at 9-9 and 10-10. However, for the second consecutive set the Mavericks finished on a 5-1 scoring spree.

COUGAR LEADERS: Libby Goodman put together a 15-kill evening with a .387 hitting percentage while Bre Allen registered 13 kills. Lilly Woods had one of her best collegiate matches as the freshman tallied 11 kills and a .381 hitting mark.

Along the back row Madelyn Long produced 17 digs. Izzy Jones played a solid match from her setter spot as she handed out 43 assists with five kills and nine digs.
