LAKEWOOD, CO- The Colorado Christian men's basketball team started strong and led wire to wire in an impressive showing in their home opener against Yellowstone Christian. Led by a barrage from beyond the arc, the Cougars dominated the Centurions en route to a 100-63 victory.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougars began the game scoring their points from the three-point line.
Christian St. Germain started off the scoring with a wide-open shot from downtown, and
Andy Stafford and
Ross Williams got in on the onslaught from deep with back-to-back threes to grab a 9-0 lead. Williams continued to hurt the Centurions with two more threes midway through the half as he started the game 4-4 from beyond the arc.
Â
Colorado Christian then began to enforce their will in the post as
Christian Bento and
Isaiah Alonzo put back several Cougar shots for easy baskets. St. Germain and Williams poured in consecutive threes to close the half with Colorado Christian leading 57-36.
Â
Williams continued to do it all for the Cougars in the second half, mixing in defense, strong drives to the hoop, and a two-handed jam to ignite the crowd at the CCU Event Center. Another three from St. Germain put Colorado Christian ahead 75-38 midway through the second half.
Â
Jason Gallant went on a 5-0 run of his own with a jumper and three-pointer in less than a minute of play. Perhaps the most exciting part of the game came with six minutes to play. Alonzo used a pump fake to get free from his defender and streaked down the lane to slam home a one-handed dunk. The following possession for Yellowstone Christian resulted in a turnover and a two-handed dunk in transition for Stafford as the Cougars bench went wild.
Ben Moore finished the scoring for Colorado Christian with a layup as the game ended with a 100-63 win for the Cougars.
Â
COUGAR LEADERS:
Ross Williams paced Colorado Christian with 33 points, including 5-7 from deep. Alonzo and Bento snagged nine and eight rebounds respectively, and
Jaret Duft dished out five assists.
