LAKEWOOD, CO – Just 24 hours removed from a large win against Yellowstone Christian, the Colorado Christian men's basketball was looking to replicate Saturday's success. It did not happen.
In a Sunday matinee, the Centurions used strong shooting from behind the arc to produce a 77-74 victory over Colorado Christian.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Yellowstone Christian made 12 three-pointers as they took 18 shots from behind the arc in each half. In Colorado Christian's win on Saturday, they never trailed and led by as much as 44 points in their 33-point triumph. Today's game saw 19 lead changes with neither team holding a lead larger than nine points.
The game started as if the Cougars would repeat Saturday's success as they went up by nine points less than four minutes into the contest. However, the rest of game was closely played through out. After the game's first 20 minutes, Yellowstone Christian took a 37-34 edge into the locker room.
As the second half unfolded Yellowstone Christian went ahead 47-41 just over five minutes after leaving the locker room. That six-point spread was largest lead in the last 20 minutes. The Cougars responded well as they took three point leads on two occasions. However, they could never get that edge past more than one possession.
Isaiah Alonzo hit a lay-up with 3:49 left to give the home team a 68-66 lead. It was the last time they led in the contest. With 3:10 remaining, the Centurions took the lead for good when Devin Sessions hit a three-pointer.
Down the stretch the Cougars had five opportunities to retake the lead or tie the score but couldn't connect. The final chance came from Ross Williams but his three-pointer from the wing did not find the bottom of the net.
COUGAR LEADERS: Williams scored 30-plus points for the second straight night with a 37-point performance. The senior has grabbed 11 rebounds. Alonzo hit for 22 points while grabbing a game high 15 rebounds. For Williams it was his second double-double of the season and the first for Alonzo.
