LAKEWOOD, CO- Ross Williams had a night to remember as the Cougars picked up their first RMAC win. Colorado Christian shot the lights out from beyond the arc, taking down South Dakota Mines 73-66.
HOW IT HAPPENED- From the first minute of the game, Williams was hot from three-point range. South Dakota Mines jumped ahead early, but Williams refused to let his team get down by too much. He hit consecutive threes to start the game, and continued with a layup. Then, Williams proceeded to drill three straight three-pointers in a clinical display of shooting.
After scoring the first 17 points of the game for his team, Williams passed to Andy Stafford for another three to give the Cougars a 21-20 lead. A three and layup from Williams gave him 22 of the team's first 25 points. The barrage from deep continued, as Christian St. Germain and DJ McDonald got in on the onslaught to give their team an eight point lead. Stafford made a layup and another triple as the Cougars took a 39-34 lead to the break.
Christian Bento got the second half scoring started for his team, converting a layup a minute into the period. The clinical three-point shooting did not stop in the second frame, as Stafford, Williams and St. Germain connected on three straight possessions. The Hardrockers hung tough, hitting a number of shots from deep themselves to keep the margin manageable.
A three with 6:23 left in the game gave South Dakota Mines its first lead since early in the game, but Williams once again responded. Trailing by one, he elevated to drill a three and was hit on the way down to draw a free throw. Williams converted the four-point play to put the Cougars back up by three. The next two possessions resulted in another three and a layup from Williams as Colorado Christian took back control by eight. After the Hardrockers clawed back to within three, Williams put the punctuation on his excellent night, closing with a three-point play and steal that ended with a Darius Henderson layup. The memorable night ended in a 73-66 victory for the Cougars.
