Cougars Fall at No. 7 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, CO – Looking to pull off a nationally recognized upset on Friday afternoon, the Cougars couldn't put together a win.

Using late spurts in each set, No. 7 Colorado Mesa notched a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 26-24) victory against Colorado Christian.

Friday's action was originally planned to by an RMAC pod also featuring Westminster but the Griffins were unable to make the trip due to COVID-19 concerns.

HOW IT HAPPENED: During the opening set the Cougars put themselves in a solid spot as they held a 15-14 edge. However, the Mavericks proceeded to score five straight points to build momentum in taking the opening frame.

Despite the Mavericks holding a lead during the middle portion of the second set, Colorado Christian battled back and got within 15-14 and 20-18 but couldn't pull any closer as the home took a commanding lead in the match.

During the closing stanza Colorado Christian held a 16-14 edge only to see the home team scored five unanswered points. However, the undaunted Cougars rallied back and took a 22-21 and 23-22 advantage. It was nip-and-tuck during the final points before the Mavericks prevailed on their second match point.

COUGAR LEADERS: In just her second start at the NCAA level, Breanna Allen posted a team high 13 kills; which also tied for match high honors. The junior transfer notched a .321 hitting percentage as well.

The specialty players were led by Christa Tucker's 10 digs while Maddie Burns handed out 29 assists.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Both teams had 13 hitting errors by the seventh ranked Mavericks had 50-37 kills advantage
  • The Cougars served up six aces compared to four from the home team
  • Colorado Christian won the defensive battle at the net with a 6.0-3.0 block edge
