Cougars Nab First Win

LAKEWOOD, CO – What took five weeks to play, got a result the Colorado Christian women's volleyball team has been striving for.

In an RMAC pod with Adams State and South Dakota Mines, which was originally scheduled for January, the Cougars split their two matches as they notched their first win of the campaign.

Match 1 – South Dakota Mines 3, Colorado Christian 0

The Hardrockers recorded a .362 hitting percentage and trailed only in the first set as they swept Colorado Christian.

In the opening stanza the lead changed hands five times with nine ties. South Dakota Mines made their significant scoring spurt in the ladder stages. Leading 16-15, the visitors pushed that lead to 20-15 then 23-16 as they grabbed the match lead.

Attempts to comeback by the Cougars were thwarted by fast starts in the second and third sets by South Dakota Mines.

Breanna Allen was a bright spot offensively for the Cougars as the junior transfer had a match high 15 kills while registering a .343 hitting percentage.

Match 2 – Colorado Christian 3, Adams State 1

After a slow start, the Cougars battled back for their first win of the season with significant contributions from the squad's freshmen.

The Grizzles rushed out to a big lead, and never trailed in the first stanza, to start the contest as they posted a 25-13 victory. Colorado Christian, despite being challenged in the second frame, never trailed as they knotted the contest up at a set apiece.

What followed was a third set that had six lead changes and seven ties. Tied at 14-14, the Cougars scored five of the next six points to take a significant lead and grab control of the contest. The fourth set started ominously for the home team. Adams State held a lead throughout the stanza and were up 24-21. After the Cougars fought off four set points, they took their first lead of the set at 25-24 then won the match on a block assist effort from Kristy Dick and Jacey Johnson.

Offensive the freshmen duo of Alli Douglass and Kylar Raymond combined for 25 of the teams 52 kills. Douglass registered a .303 hitting mark while Raymond had a .346 hitting percentage.

Along the back line freshman Megan Piton had 17 digs in her second start at the libero position.

NEXT UP: The Cougars host Black Hills State at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
