LAKEWOOD, CO – It had been nearly two years since the Colorado Christian softball team hosted an RMAC contest. They broke that long drought with great success.
On a chilly Thursday the Cougars swept a doubleheader from Chadron State. Moreover, it was the program's first official games with All Star Park as its new home.
Game One – Colorado Christian 6, Chadron State 4
The Eagles took an early lead on a Sloane Quijas RBI base knock in the first inning. Colorado Christian responded with a pair of runs in their half of the stanza as Sydney Reamer connected on a lead off homerun before Piper Lujan's single scored Sami Edwards.
In the third frame Samaria Roope hit a two-run single to leftfield as the home team upped their lead to 4-1. Two more runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Reamer and Kaelin Morkisch pushed the Cougars edge to 6-1.
Chadron State plated three runs in the sixth inning on a Quijas two-run homerun and an Ellie Owens RBI single. The Eagles did bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh frame with no outs but couldn't piece together a significant scoring threat.
Morkisch had a team high three hits to go along with Reamer's game to pace the Cougars offense.
In the circle Jennifer Romero earned the win with three strikeouts and three hits allowed in 5.1 innings of work. Roope pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn her first save of the season.
Game Two – Colorado Christian 12, Chadron State 4 (Six Innings)
Despite falling behind by a run in the first inning, the Cougars jumped on Chadron State starting pitcher Peyton Propp for four runs in the opening frame. Chadron State looked to stay in the game with a solo homerun by Mackenzie Kroll in the second stanza.
Colorado Christian went ahead 6-2 with a single run in the second and third innings respectively. The Cougars pushed their lead to 8-2 when the Middleton duo of Kenzie and Kayla each produced RBI singles in the fourth inning.
The Eagles staved off the mercy rule for one inning with two runs in the top of fifth on a Quijas long ball before the Colorado Christian offense scored three runs in the fifth stanza then a single run in the sixth inning to finish the game.
Stephanie Day was perfect at the plate in four at-bats. The senior also scored three times and drove-in another to lead the Cougars at the plate. Kayla Middleton went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Julie Katz went the distance in the circle. She had three strikeouts and allowed six hits as she moved to 2-0 on the season.
