LAKEWOOD, CO – With a significant goal for the Colorado Christian baseball program to make the RMAC Tournament for the first time in school history, the journey towards that goal started Friday.
The Cougar began its 36-game conference schedule today as they hosted New Mexico Highlands for a pair of games at All Star Park.
Game One – New Mexico Highlands 15, Colorado Christian 3
The first pitch the Cougars saw was driven over the right field fence as Caden Walton nailed his first long ball of the season. Unfortunately for the home team, the rest of the game went in the Cowboys favor.
Despite trailing 3-1 after the third inning the Cougars stayed within striking distance but couldn't piece together enough offense for their second run to start a rally. The flood gates opened in the seventh inning when New Mexico Highlands put a six-spot on the scoreboard then did the same in the ninth inning.
The Cougars completed the scoring with RBI hits from Connor Marschall and Eli Ludwig in the ninth stanza.
Jardian Martinez threw a complete game for the Cowboys with seven strikeouts while giving up seven hits.
Game Two – Colorado Christian 7, New Mexico Highlands 3
Colorado Christian responded immediately after the game one loss with a pair of runs in the first frame of the seven inning game with RBI from Jordan Medina and Luke Thompson.
The Cougars pushed their lead to 5-0 in the third inning with a two-run double from Thompson and later scored on a passed ball. New Mexico Highlands scored their first run in the fourth inning as they tried to get back into the contest.
However, Colorado Christian added two runs in the fourth frame as Blake Mattey hit a sacrifice fly and Wyatt Crenshaw scored on a wild pitch. The Cowboys scored twice in the fifth but didn't put together a serious threat the rest of the contest.
Caden Walton had a team high three hits while scoring two runs while Crenshaw scored the play three times.
Connor McCollum threw a six-hitter over six innings with four strikeouts to earn the victory on the bump.
UP NEXT: The two teams play another doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
