Cougars Split Series with New Mexico Highlands

LAKEWOOD, CO – Colorado Christian ended their weekend with two more game against New Mexico Highlands. After splitting day one the two teams once again split day two, with the Cougars taking game one 13-7. New Mexico Highlands came back and took game two in extra innings winning 6-5 in eight innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE: New Mexico Highlands got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the first on a double, a run in the second on a solo home run and then in the third scored three more off a leadoff home run, a single and a double to increase the Cowboys lead to seven runs.

The Cougars responded well in the third inning scoring six runs highlighted by a two RBI single by Frankie Shearn III.

It was all Cougars after that, the Cougars took the lead in the fourth inning on a Connor Marschall double down the right field line. The Cougars headed into the fifth with a 9-7 lead, after scoring another run in the fifth, Jordan Medina put the Cowboys away with a solo home run in the sixth inning to put the Cougars up 11-7.

The Cougars scored two more in the eighth and walked away with a game one come from behind win.

COUGAR LEADERS: Blake Mattey led the team with three RBI, Wyatt Crenshaw, Mattey, Medina, and Eli Ludwig all had two hits for the Cougars. Medina scored four runs for the Cougars.

On the mound Cameron Spaeth highlighted a strong pitching performance for the Cougars as he threw five shutout innings in relief and recorded the win.

13 runs are the most runs the Cougars have scored this season.

Seven runs the biggest deficit the Cougars have come back from.

 

GAME TWO:

The Cowboys once again came out strong, scoring in the first inning, however the Cougars were the one to get the big early inning lead, as two Cowboys errors in the bottom of the first gave Colorado Christian a 4-1 lead. The Cougars extended the lead in the second with a Jordan Medina RBI single.

New Mexico Highlands responded with three runs in the in the third inning, with a RBI single and a two run home run.

The Cowboys tied the game in the sixth with a solo home run, the seventh inning was filled with excitement, as Blake Mattey kept the game tied as he robbed a possible home run in the seventh inning going up over the wall to bring the ball back. The bottom of the seventh the Cougars had two runners on before hitting into a triple play to end hopes of finishing the game in regulation.

In the top of the eighth the Cowboys hit a lead-off home run and closed out the Cougars in the bottom of the inning, securing the one run win.

COUGAR LEADERS: Jordan Medina had two RBI for the Cougars, Blake Mattey was walked three times. Wyatt Crenshaw scored two runs.

Nate Loro pitched five innings in relief, allowing two runs and struck out four.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • The Cougars had nine walks and only three hits.
  • Neither starting pitcher recorded the decision for the Cougars.
