Sanders Lead Cougars to Golden Goal Win

LAKEWOOD, CO – Colorado Christian got the season underway this afternoon as they hosted Black Hill State in a wild game that took two overtimes to decide. The Cougars came out on top as they scored the game winning goal in the second overtime with under two minutes left to go to win 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Both teams spent much of the first half locked at 0-0, each team had a few opportunities as Black Hills sent four shots towards the net while the Cougars lofted seven shots at the goal. The Cougars broke things open in the 36th minute off a corner kick from freshman Cora Lopp as the crossing ball found the head of Kinley Sanders and then promptly found the back of the net as the keeper had no chance to make a play on the ball.

The Yellow Jackets looked to respond coming out of the half time break and respond they did. After winning a corner kick, the ball was played into the box, a scramble ensued as neither team could control the ball before it landed at the feet of Gabbi Nowodworski who buried it in the back of the net, just over the head of keeper Ireland VanDyke.

The score remained tied at the end of regulation and so two ten minute overtime periods would be played. Both teams stayed close in the first overtime, with the Cougars being the only team to get a shot off.  Heading into the second overtime the Cougars came out strong, getting two quick shots off and pressuring the Black Hills defense. With under two minutes to go, Kinley Sanders received the ball about 30 yards from the goal, got the ball on her right foot and fired a strike that caught the keeper by surprise and crashed into the back of the net as the team rushed the field to celebrate with Sanders.

COUGAR LEADERS: Alaina Kregel led the team with four shots, Brook-lyn Shultz had three shots as well. Sanders led the team with two shots on goal as well as two goals.

In net Ireland VanDyke had two saves as the Cougar defense limited the Yellow Jackets to only three total shots on goal.
