Cougars Spilt Series With Mines in Walk Off Win

LAKEWOOD, CO – The Cougars finished their home series against Colorado School of Mines with two seven inning games on Saturday. The two teams split the double header and split the series as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE: Both teams scored in the opening frame, with a RBI single for the Orediggers and the Cougars scoring on a throwing error in the bottom of the inning.

It was all Colorado School of Mines afterwards, with the Orediggers scoring twice in the second and three times in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead.

The Cougars responded in the seventh with a single by Luke Thompson to bring the score to within four, the Cougars could not take any more out of the lead and the Cougars fell in game one 6-2.

COUGAR LEADERS: Luke Thompson drove in the only run of the game for the Cougars, Frankie Shearn III and Connor Marschall both scored for the Cougars.

On the mound, Cameron Spaeth started the game and threw 3.2 innings with three strikeouts and allowing six runs. Tyler Fischer pitched 2.1 innings with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO: A pitcher's duel in game two as both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the third. Connor Marschall got the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the third with a towering home run down the left field line to put the Cougars in the lead for the first time today.

Colorado School of Mines responded in the fourth inning with two runs on back to back singles to take a 2-1 lead.

The two teams remained scoreless until the seventh inning, the Cougars had their chances however with a deep fly out by Blake Mattey in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runners on that took the center fielder back all the way to the warning track.

An RBI double in the seventh put the Orediggers up by two runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

The bottom of the seventh inning the Cougars tied up the game on a no doubt two run home run by freshman Luke Thompson to tie the game.

In the eighth inning the Cougars loaded the bases before Russell Cruz, pinch hitting hit a deep fly ball to center field that scored Caden Walton and secure the win for the Cougars.

COUGAR LEADERS: Manny Thompson and Caden Walton both had three hits for the Cougars. Luke Thompson had two RBI. Connor Marschall had two hits and two walks.

On the mound Justin Kiedinger and JC Watne both pitched 3.2 innings, with Kiedinger getting the start and Watne getting the win in relief. They both had three strikeouts as well.
