BOLIVAR, MO – The Colorado Christian men's soccer team are just a bunch of road warriors.
Playing their second official NCAA season in the calendar year, the Cougars picked-up where they left off in the spring of 2021. A late rally pushed Colorado Christian to a 2-1 overtime victory at Southwest Baptist on Thursday evening.
So far in 2021, the Cougars have played seven games on the road. They have won six of those contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED: During the opening frame the home team controlled a vast majority of the play. Southwest Baptist broke through in the 38th minute. Gauthierr Vareilles was able to control a ball in close and knocked the ball into the back of the cage.
The Cougars flipped the script in the next half. After having a handful of chances in the early minutes of the second frame, they broke through in the 77th minute. The Bearcats were whistled for a handball in the box then Jorge Lopez calmly deposited the ball into the net on the ensuing penalty kick opportunity.
Colorado Christian's momentum continued into the extra frame. On their only corner kick of the evening the Cougars put the ball in the box where Gabe Roloff took a nice touch with his chest. He controlled the ball from 10 yards out and secured the victory with a right footed blast in the 96th minute.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Colorado Christian held a 12-6 edge in overall shots (7-2 for shots on goal)
- Roloff came off the bench to take a team high three shots
- This was the first all-time meeting between the two schools
QUOTEABLE: "They are a good technical team and in the first half they beat us in almost in every aspect. However we made adjustments in the second half and had opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net. We kept the pressure on them and we managed the game really well in the final 45 and in overtime," said head coach Brad Camp.
UP NEXT: The Cougars conclude their season opening road trip through the Show-Me State with a Saturday afternoon contest against William Jewell. Kick-off is set for Noon (Central Time).
