Lakey's Brace Continues Winning Streak

LAKEWOOD, CO – Soccer is the beautiful game. And everything is beautiful right now for the Colorado Christian men's program.

On late Sunday afternoon the Cougars continued their winning ways as they notched a 2-1 victory against UCCS.

Dating back to last season it is the programs seventh straight win. Extending the school record for consecutive wins the teams already owned.

Moreover, it is the Cougars first win against UCCS since the 2004 season. Snapping a 23-game winning streak for the Mountain Lions.

HOW IT HAPPENED: A very methodical first half started the contest as a majority of the opening 45 minutes was played in the middle of the field. There were more total substitutes (7) in the frame then there were total shots (4).

The second half was the exact opposite. The three goals were scored less than seven minutes apart as the stanza had nine total shots.

Liam Lakey put the Cougars on the scoreboard in the 51st minute when he back heeled the ball into the net after a feed from Gabe Roloff. The 1-0 lead was short lived as UCCS found the equalizer less than two minutes later as Kolby Raineri connected on a free kick from 35 yards out.

The high energy continued moments later when Lakey tallied his brace. The senior gathered a pass from Caiden Dixon and blasted a perfect shot from the right side into the far side netting from just outside the box. It is the second straight game in which Lakey scored the game winning goal.

UCCS was forced to play the final 17-plus minutes a man down as a red card was issued to Adin Schwenke when he knocked down Cougars goalkeeper Max Collingwood earning his second yellow card.

The intensity continued as the Mountain Lions were able to press into their offensive third but a stalwart Colorado Christian defense sealed the victory.
