Cougars Tame Mountain Lions, Earn Draw

In a mid-week conference matchup Thursday afternoon, Colorado Christian faced off against one of the top teams in the RMAC conference in UC Colorado Springs. It became a battle of the defenses but neither side blinked as the game eventually turned into a 0-0 draw. CCU earns a valuable point as they head into the final three games of the regular season looking to make a push into the postseason.

First Half:      Both teams used the first half to try and discover how each other was going to play them throughout the game. They tried to feel each other out and see where the attack points were to try and take advantage of.

The Cougars focused almost exclusively on defense during the first half of the game as they tried to limit the potent UCCS offensive attack. The Mountain Lions outshot the Cougs 3-0 in the first half, with one of those shot making it on target which was saved by CCU keeper Max Collingwood.

Second Half:     In the second half, the story remained much of the same as both of the defenses continued to shine. Just when it seemed as though the offenses were primed to breakthrough, a great defensive play or save would shift the momentum back to the defensive side of the ball. Senior Keeper Max Collingwood was stellar in the second half as he withstood an onslaught of shot attempts, but remained steady and kept UCCS from getting on the scoreboard.

The Cougars had two decent looks in the second half to try and take the lead with the first one coming off of a free kick in the 78th minute. A UCCS fould just outside the box set the Cougars up with a chance to put one on net as Lucca Casci lined up to take the kick. He sent a shot sailing towards the goal but it went above the cross bar to give the Mountain Lions a goal kick. A similar opportunity arose in the 85th minute of play as CCU was setup with another free kick just outside the top of the box. Miguel Fonseca took this kick and put it on target, but it was clocked by UCCS defenders and then cleared out of the zone. The final five minutes ran off the clock and the final whistle blew finalizing the 0-0 draw.

Head coach Brad Camp was excited with the result after the game and spoke as he said, "To be able to get a result against a top ranked team is amazing. I'm so proud of these boys and their effort. This result is completely on the team, from the players who played 90 minutes, a few minutes, and the guys who didn't play are all responsible for that. They all bought in to what we needed to do today, so they pushed each other and were able to secure this result. What's cool is I know everyone on this team is already thinking about how we can do it again on Sunday as we take on CSU Pueblo.".

The Cougars record now sits at 7-4-4 overall, and 3-2-2 in conference play. CCU has enjoyed their home field advantage this year as they now have a record of 4-1-2 at home on the year. They will be back on the pitch this upcoming Sunday for their final home game of the regular season which is going to be a big conference matchup against another top team in CSU Pueblo. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30PM MST and will be at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood. Come out and support your Cougars as they make a postseason run and play in front of their home crowd one last time this year.
