The Cougars took to the field on Sunday afternoon to face off against third ranked CSU-Pueblo in their final home game of the 2022 regular season. After a tightly contested first half, CCU broke free in the second half to score two goals, which was all they needed thanks to a great game from Senior keeper
Max Collingwood as he kept the ThunderWolves potent offense scoreless all game to give the Cougs the 2-0 victory on the day.
Â
First Half:Â Â Â Â It was a battle of the defenses in the first half as both teams got into the flow of the game. The Cougs caught a break late in the half in the 36
th minute, a player from CSUP was issued a Red Card, which forced them to play the remainder of the game down a man. This allowed the Cougs to ease into the offensive side of things and really execute their game plan efficiently.
Â
The ThunderWolves outshot the Cougars 12-2 in the first half, with five of those shots landing on target and deflected away by
Max Collingwood.
Â
Second Half:Â Â Â Â Colorado Christian utilized the one-man advantage throughout the entire second half, as they were able to slow the CSUP attack and really stretch the field. The Cougars got the break they were looking for in the 61
st minute.
Grant Roloff secured the ball on the Cougars side of the field and then delivered a perfect pass over the heads of the ThunderWolves defenders to a streaking
Tobi Osifodunrin down the sideline who controlled the pass and then made a move to get past one defender before firing a shot past the CSUP keeper and into the back of the net to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead.
Â
Tobi was not done on the day as just thirteen minutes later he broke free again and netted the second goal for CCU to give them the commanding 2-0 lead with just 15 minutes remaining in the game. The remaining time ticked away as Colorado Christian had done something that hadn't been done in nearly 10 years which is to have defeated a nationally ranked opponent. That hadn't been done by the team since 2013 when the Cougs defeated the Colorado School of Mines who was ranked ninth at the time.
Â
The win today capped off one of the most impressive weekends in school history for any sport. After securing a tie on Thursday against 17
th ranked UCCS, they defeated the third ranked CSU Pueblo today, which is the highest ranked opponent that any CCU team has ever beaten.
Head coach
Brad Camp spoke after the game and said, "I am just amazed. I am out of words to describe the players and the team spirit. I am humbled and proud to be these guys coach. I know they are going to keep fighting, so I am so excited to get back to work and keep fighting with them."
After the game, the Cougars were able to honor one of the best to ever play with the program in Senior Goalkeeper
Max Collingwood. Collingwood hails from Christchurch, New Zealand and he was joined on the field by his Parents Wayne and Erica who flew in for his final home game for the Cougars. Max definitely put on a show for his parents and the home crowd as he made several spectacular saves on the day on route to his second consecutive shutout. He now has a career goals against average of 1.71 which is second all-time in program history. He also now has nine shutouts, which is tied for second all-time.
