Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Dave Land

Last Minute Goal Downs Cougars

The Colorado Christian men's Soccer team kicked off their final weekend of the regular season on Friday as they traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah and took on Westminster College. It was a big matchup as the Cougars currently sit at fifth in the conference right behind Westminster at number four, so the result of this game would have some bearing in the shape of the RMAC Playoffs beginning next week. Both teams netted a first half goal to go into the second half tied 1-1, and the score remained tied until there was less than a minute remaining in the game as the Griffins scored the game winner to deal CCU a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat.

First Half:     The game began and was a back and forth battle early on. In the 17th minute, Westminster broke away and scored the opening goal of the game to take the early 1-0 lead. The Cougars had a good chance to tie the game in the 29th minute as Grant Roloff took a penalty kick but just missed. Tobi Osifodunrin collected the rebound and fired another shot on goal, but the Griffins Keeper made the save to preserve their lead.

However, Colorado Christian was able to break free late in the second half as Lucca Casci evened things up with his third goal of the season to tie the game 1-1 which is where the game remained at the end of the first half.

Second Half:      With the score knotted up, the second half was very much a defensive battle as each side was looking for the go ahead goal. It was a pretty uneventful second half until the final minute when Westminster received a corner kick with around 40 seconds left in the game. They took full advantage of that corner as they sent a pass into the middle where they were able to connect and send one into the back of the net to give them the 2-1 advantage with just 24 seconds left to play. The remaining time ticked away and the Cougars fell in heartbreaking fashion by the 2-1 final score.

Head coach Brad Camp spoke after the tough end and said, "We played a good game. It is not normal for us to concede the goals that we did, so I know the boys will be eager to rectify that Sunday against Mesa. Hopefully we will have more guys back from injury and illness then."

The Cougars will be back in action on Sunday October 23rd when they will take on Colorado Mesa University in the final game of the 2022 regular season. That game will be a road matchup for the Cougars as it is hosted by Mesa in Grand Junction, CO and is scheduled to begin at 11AM MST.
