CCU Drops Finale, Still Secure Playoff Spot

Colorado Christian wrapped up the 2022 regular season on Sunday morning as they took on Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. It was not an ideal finish as the Cougars were defeated by a final score of 4-1, but it was not all bad news for CCU as they secured a birth in the RMAC Playoffs for the first time in program history. They have earned the #6 seed and will be taking on 3rd seeded Westminster in the first round of the playoffs this week.

CCU began the game holding their fate in their own hands as they needed to win to guarantee their spot on the conference tournament. However, they ran into a buzz saw in Colorado Mesa as they were celebrating their seniors for the final time during the last game of the regular season. Mesa struck first early in the first half as they scored the opening marker in the 12th minute of the game to put CMU up 1-0. The remainder of the first half was a defensive battle as the game went into the break with the same 1-0 score.

Mesa extended their lead early in the second half as they tallied goals in the 51st and 64th minutes to put them up 3-0 over CCU. The Cougars finally broke free and put one into the back of the net in the 78th minute. Dylan Hall scored his second goal of the season coming off an assist by Gabe Roloff. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Cougars would get as Mesa added one more goal late to secure the 4-1 victory over Colorado Christian.

The Cougars needed some help to keep their playoff hopes alive and that was exactly what they got from CSU Pueblo as the ThunderWolves defeated Metro State which secured the final playoff birth to CCU so they earned their way into the tournament for the first time in program history.

Head coach Brad Camp spoke after the game in regards to the team making the conference playoffs for the first time by saying, "I just want to acknowledge every person who has bought in to what we have tried to do over the last four years. It has been a long journey to finally make the playoffs.  Big thanks to our athletic directors, the coaches, and the players. We win ugly sometimes, and they don't care. Now, we want to win on Thursday, so I want to talk about that. We can do this, and I can't wait to get to work on that."

Colorado Christian will finish the regular season with a record of 8-6-4 overall and 4-4-2 in conference play. They will be back in action on Thursday October 27th when they will take on Westminster College in the first round of the RMAC Conference playoffs.
