LAKEWOOD,CO- The Cougars closed the home portion of their season and celebrated seven seniors on Sunday against Westminster College. Despite a great battle, CCU ultimately fell to the Griffins 2-0 due to some tough luck.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Westminster struck quickly, playing a ball over the top that was finished for a 1-0 lead in the first minute. Saige Stock had a look but went high and to the right. Several more Griffin shots were repelled by keeper Ashleigh Maguire as things tightened up towards the end of the half. At the break the score stood at 1-0 in favor of WCG.
A tough break occurred in the 51st minute as Ashleigh Willette was called for a straight red card on a challenge just outside the box. Now a player down, CCU upped their level of play, determined to keep within striking distance. Jessica Sims took a shot but missed just left, but then a tough foul call in the box granted Westminster a penalty that they converted for a 2-0 advantage. A battle to the end resulted in a 2-0 Griffins win despite a great effort from the Cougars.Â
