LAKEWOOD, CO- It was senior night at the CCU Event Center as the Cougars honored Ross Williams and Christian St. Germain before taking on UCCS. Colorado Christian fell in overtime 95-90 after a wild buzzer beating three from the Mountain Lions at the end of regulation.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Ross Williams got started quickly with a layup 10 seconds into play, and DJ McDonald hit a jumper to keep the scoring going. Isaiah Alonzo got consecutive layups to go, the second being a three-point play to make the score 9-8 UCCS. A Williams three pushed the Cougars ahead, and Nic Ziel and Andy Stafford pushed the lead to five with back-to-back buckets. The Cougars led 19-12 midway through the half.
Shaylen Woodberry drilled a three-pointer to make the lead eight, but the Mountain Lions battled back to close the gap to just one with 3:32 remaining in the half. Colorado Christian responded with a flurry of free throws, including three just before half from McDonald to take a 42-31 lead to the break.
Williams hit another three to stretch the lead to 14 for the Cougars, but UCCS refused to go down without a fight, cutting the lead back to six. Williams made sure the rally did not last long with another bucket from beyond the arc, and Stafford hit a three of his own to give his team a 65-53 lead with 10:26 to go in regulation.
A McDonald jumper with 3:55 to go had the Cougars up nine, but once again the Mountain Lions responded to cut the gap to three with 33 seconds remaining. A wild sequence ensued at the end of the game as UCCS missed a shot, managed to grab the rebound and somehow hit a fadeaway three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied at 81.
The Mountain Lions came out on a four point run, but Jason Gallant converted a three-point play to bring his team back into it. The two teams continued to trade baskets as the lead fluctuated from three to one often throughout the overtime period. Stafford got a jumper to go with 49 seconds remaining, but the Mountains Lions held on from there for a 95-90 win.
